Stefan R. Stoyanov is an experienced litigator whose practice focuses on all aspects of intellectual property disputes and business litigation in federal and state courts.  Stefan has extensive experience representing defendants and plaintiffs in a variety of complex trademark, copyright, trade secret, patent and technological disputes, as well as business matters.  He has represented clients in all stages of litigation, including pre-filing investigations, jury trials, and appeals. 

Stefan also handles various intellectual property transactions, including protection and enforcement, licensing, technology transfers, due diligence, and counseling.

Stefan’s clients have ranged from individuals and startups to Fortune 100 industry leaders.  He has also developed an international practice representing clients from Australia, South Africa, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Bulgaria.

Recent representative matters include:

  • Defending a non-profit charitable association against Lanham Act and trademark infringement claims;
  • Representing a software company seeking to recover past due license fees;
  • Successfully representing a photographer in a copyright infringement lawsuit against a large multinational company;
  • Successfully representing a financial software company against breach of contract claims;
  • Securing the dismissal of a potential trademark opposition threatened against a cosmetics company;
  • Successfully representing a foreign electronics company in asserting claims for patent infringement;
  • Winning a dismissal of a complaint for lack of personal jurisdiction where the lawsuit sought professional service fees, as well as dismissal of the subsequent appeal;
  • Successfully representing a financial institution in recovering past investment banking fees;
  • Successfully defending, through a jury trial, a manufacturer accused of trade secret misappropriation;

Prior to joining Aguilar Bentley LLC, in 2014, Stefan founded Stoyanov Law PLLC, an intellectual property firm. Stefan has also worked in the Intellectual Property Boutique Fish & Neave (merged with Ropes & Gray in 2004), and later in the Intellectual Property groups of the top national law firms King & Spalding and Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman.

Before law school Stefan developed a successful career as an engineer.  He wrote software, and designed hardware and software systems in the fields of robotics, industrial automation, database management, data collection, computer systems, semiconductors, networking and communications, and enterprise systems.

Stefan received his law degree from Cornell Law School, where he served on the Board of Editors of the Cornell Law Review.
